Jan 16-18 DESCRIPTION:The AIARE 1 is a 3 day/24 hour \;introduction to avalanche hazard management. \; Instruction al sessions are (3 days-8 hours/day = 24 hours tot al including both class and field instruction).\n \n Students can expect to develop a good grounding in how to prepare for and carry out a trip\, to u nderstand basic decision making while in the field \, and to learn rescue techniques required to find and dig up a buried person (if an avalanche occur s and someone in the party is caught).\n \n Studen t Learning Outcomes\n \n At the end of the AIARE 1 course the student should be able to:\n \n \n De velop a plan \;for travel in avalanche terrain .\n Demonstrate the ability to identify \;ava lanche terrain.\n Effectively use the Decision Ma king Framework to make terrain choices in a group setting\n Demonstrate effective companion rescue. \n \n \n Instructional sessions (24 hours includin g both class and field instruction) :\n \n 1. Observations and Information Gathering\n \n \n Field observation techniques\n Snowpack t ests: rutschblock\, compression test\n Avalanche danger factors or &ldquo\;Red Flags&rdquo\;\n Obs ervation checklist\n Avalanche danger scale\n \n \n 3. Trip Planning and Preparation\n \n \n Avala nche terrain recognition\, assessment\, and select ion\n Route finding and travel techniques\n Deci sion making and Human Factors\n \n \n 4.
